Get Current! Using the Breakpoint Implementation Toolkit to Update and Document AST Breakpoints

Stay up-to-date with the latest antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) breakpoints. Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL), American Society for Microbiology (ASM), College of American Pathologists (CAP), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), have jointly developed this Breakpoint Implementation Toolkit (BIT) to assist clinical laboratories in updating minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) breakpoints. This webinar focused on how the 2023 BIT can assist the laboratory with MIC breakpoint changes and did not cover disk diffusion. Speakers provided examples from three different commercial AST systems.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss the updated College of American Pathologists (CAP) checklist items and how the Breakpoint Implementation Toolkit (BIT) can be used to meet regulatory needs.

  2. Understand antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) system-specific steps to complete the BIT.

  3. Develop a strategy for updating to current minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) breakpoints.
